Isaiah 24:23 The moon will be embarrassed, and the sun will be ashamed, because the Lord All-Powerful will rule as king on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Jerusalem's leaders will see His greatness.
The book of Isaiah contains a lot of prophesy, foretelling of things that have happened (but they happened after the writing of the book) or things that will happen. In light of a recent Bible study session we had, I thought this verse was so interesting (and I look forward to seeing the truth of it happen!). In the session, we talked about how we often do not see the full picture of Jesus. We look at Him and we see a meek, humble, human servant who came to teach us what love should really look like.
Jesus did come for that. But where did He come from? And when He ascended back to Heaven, what did He go back to?
We know from John 1:1-4 that Jesus was with God in the beginning and He was God. So, He was glorious!! He succumbed to humility for us, to reconcile us to God so that Heaven is possible for us. He was not always meek, humble, or human.
So when He went back to Heaven, after His death and resurrection, I believe He went back to that glory. The Bible tells us in Mark 16:19 that He is seated at the right hand of the Father, which we learned in our study is the seat of glory and honor (so if we want to honor someone, it would be appropriate to seat them to our right). In the session, we talked about the picture of Jesus painted in Revelation: dressed in all white, blinding light surrounding Him, a sword coming from His mouth. This is a picture of glory, power and strength.
Anyhow, back to the verse at hand... When the Lord All-Powerful rules over Jerusalem (and the rest of earth!) He will be so glorious that the moon and sun pale in comparison. If I had not done this study, I probably would have glossed over these verses, not understanding them. But since we talked about Jesus and His glory, I realize that these verses are talking about Him being more glorious that the amazing things He created, the sun and the moon. I absolutely cannot wait to see that glory someday. I cannot wait to see the awesomeness of God (although the Bible also says something about how it will actually be too amazing for us to look at!).
